The right home coffee machine depends less on budget than on how much effort you want to put into each cup. A capsule machine is a one-button job. A manual espresso machine gives you cafรฉ-style control but needs practice and ground coffee. A bean-to-cup machine grinds and brews for you, at a price. We’ve picked one machine of each type, in rising order of price: Good, Better and Best. For each one we explain who it suits and what it costs per cup.

Good (capsule): Nespresso Inissia
Best for: anyone who wants a quick, consistent espresso or lungo with no grinding, tamping or cleaning of a portafilter.
The Inissia is Nespresso’s compact entry machine for Original-line capsules. It has the most reviews of our three picks: 4.7 stars from 387 Takealot reviews. Takealot sells and ships it itself, at R1,699 against a list price of R2,799. The listing’s model code (D40-ZA-BK-NE5) suggests a South African version.
Pros – One-touch operation, and Nespresso says it heats up in 25 seconds. – Up to 19 bar pump pressure and an automatic switch-off after 9 minutes, per Nespresso. – Small footprint: 19.1 ร 32 ร 23 cm, per the listing. – 24-month warranty, per the listing.
Cons – Capsules cost more per cup than beans (see the cost table below). – No milk frother; you’ll need a separate frother for cappuccinos. – Small 0.7 L water tank, per the listing. – Used capsules create waste unless you recycle them.

Better (manual espresso): De’Longhi Dedica Style EC685
Best for: people who want to learn to make real espresso and milk drinks, and don’t mind a few minutes of hands-on work.
The Dedica is a slim (15 cm wide) pump espresso machine. It uses ground coffee in a portafilter and has a manual steam wand for frothing milk. Takealot and Loot both list it at R3,899. Takealot had the black, red and white versions in stock and sold by Takealot itself (list price R4,499). Its silver version was R4,599 from a marketplace seller. Loot listed several colours shipping in 8โ13 working days. At the same price, Takealot is the quicker option, so we link to it first. It has 104 Takealot reviews averaging 4.6 stars.
Pros – 15 bar pump pressure and a manual steam wand for milk drinks, per De’Longhi. – Very slim: 15 cm wide. – Cup warmer, flow-stop function and a descaling alert, per the listing. – 24-month warranty, per the Takealot listing.
Cons – You need ground coffee, ideally freshly ground. A good grinder is an extra cost, and it isn’t priced here. – There’s a learning curve: dose, tamp and milk texture all affect the result. – Loot’s delivery estimate (8โ13 working days) is slower than Takealot’s for in-stock colours. – The listing gives no tank capacity beyond “Water usage: 1 L”. Best (bean-to-cup): De’Longhi Magnifica S ECAM12.121.B
Best for: households that drink several coffees a day and want fresh-ground espresso at the touch of a button.
The Magnifica S grinds whole beans before each cup. A knob sets the strength, and a traditional steam wand handles milk. It’s the dearest of our three. Amazon.co.za sells it itself at R5,699, R300 less than Takealot’s R5,999 (list price R7,999); Hirsch’s had it at R5,699.99. It has 135 reviews averaging 4.8 stars.
Pros – Built-in grinder, so there’s no separate grinder to buy and fresh-ground coffee for every cup. – One-touch espresso with adjustable strength, per De’Longhi. – Beans usually cost less per cup than capsules (see the table below). – Dishwasher-safe drip-tray grid, per the listing. 24-month warranty.
Cons – The highest upfront cost of the three. – Milk drinks are made manually with the steam wand; it has no automatic milk system. – Needs regular cleaning and descaling to keep the brew unit working well. [Judgement] – Bigger than the other two picks. The listing doesn’t give dimensions, so measure your space. [Unverified]
Key specs (per listing): bean-to-cup with built-in grinder ยท 1,450 W ยท 1.7 L water (“Water usage”) ยท manual steam wand ยท 24-month warranty.

How to choose a home coffee machine
Capsule, manual or bean-to-cup?
| Capsule | Manual espresso | Bean-to-cup | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Effort per cup | Lowest | Highest | Low |
| Coffee you buy | Capsules | Ground coffee (or beans plus a grinder) | Whole beans |
| Milk drinks | Separate frother | Steam wand | Steam wand or auto milk (dearer models) |
| Upfront cost (our picks) | R1,699 | R3,899 | R5,699 |
Cost per cup
These are rough estimates based on the prices we saw today and our assumptions:
| Coffee | Price checked | Our assumption | Approx. cost per cup |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nespresso-compatible capsules (Jacobs, 80 pack) | R549 on Takealot | 1 capsule per cup | about R6.90 |
| Whole beans (Jacobs Barista Italiano Crema, 1 kg) | R359 on Takealot | 14 g for a double shot | about R5.00 |
| Whole beans (same pack) | R359 | 8 g for a single shot | about R2.90 |
Your figures will vary with the brand, dose and drink. Original Nespresso capsules and specialty beans cost more. The electricity for one coffee is small compared with the coffee itself, but machines that keep heating on standby use more. All three picks have an auto-off or standby function, per their listings.
Size and water tank
Measure under your wall cupboards. A larger tank means fewer refills; the Inissia’s 0.7 L tank is small if you make several coffees a day.
Cleaning
Capsule machines need the least work: empty the capsule bin and descale now and then. Manual machines need the portafilter rinsed and the steam wand wiped after every milk drink. Bean-to-cup machines need the grounds container emptied, the brew unit cleaned and regular descaling. Follow the manual for each.
FAQ
Is a capsule machine cheaper than a bean-to-cup machine? It costs less upfront: R1,699 against R5,699 for our picks. But on our assumptions, capsules cost about R6.90 a cup, against roughly R2.90โR5.00 for beans. If you drink a lot of coffee, a bean-to-cup machine can work out cheaper over time.
Do I need a grinder for a manual espresso machine? Not strictly, because you can buy pre-ground espresso coffee. Fresh grinding usually gives better results, though, and a grinder adds to the cost. [Judgement]
Can I use non-Nespresso capsules in the Inissia? Many brands sell “Nespresso-compatible” capsules for the Original line. Fit and results can vary, so check the capsule maker’s compatibility notes.
Which machine is best for cappuccinos and lattes? Of our picks, the Dedica and Magnifica S both have steam wands. The Inissia needs a separate milk frother.
Why do you link to Takealot when it doesn’t pay you a commission? Because we point you to the best deal. When we checked, Loot didn’t list the Inissia or the Magnifica S, so Takealot was the place to buy the Inissia. The Magnifica S was R300 cheaper on Amazon.co.za, so we link there first, even though neither link earns us a commission. The Dedica was R3,899 at both shops, and Takealot had it in stock with faster delivery, so we list Takealot first.
How we choose
These picks are research-based. We have not tested these machines ourselves. We compared specifications from live retailer listings and manufacturer descriptions, checked prices on 19 October 2026, and used Takealot customer ratings and review counts as a guide to buyer satisfaction, not as our own verdict. Cost-per-cup figures are estimates based on stated assumptions. Where a listing leaves out a spec, we say so. When we test a product hands-on, we’ll say so clearly on this page and describe what we measured. Prices, stock and promotions change often; we re-check them each time we update this guide.
