An air fryer that’s too small means cooking chips in two batches while the chicken goes cold. One that’s too big wastes counter space and money. We’ve picked three air fryers sold in South Africa right now, one for each budget, all sized for a family of four. For each one we explain who it suits, where it compromises and what it costs to run on South African electricity tariffs.

Good: Philips 1000 Series NA130/00 (6.2 L)
Best for: families who mostly air-fry the basics (chips, drumsticks, veg) and want a trusted brand for under R1,000.
This is a straightforward 6.2 L basket air fryer with simple dials for time and temperature. On Takealot it carries an average rating of 4.8 stars from 1,277 customer reviews. These are buyer opinions, not our testing.
Pros – Big enough for family-sized portions, according to Philips’ own description, for under R1,000. – Dials are quick to use and easy for anyone in the house to understand. – 24-month warranty, according to the Takealot listing. – Auto shut-off and a cool-wall exterior, per the listing.
Cons – No digital presets, cooking window or dual zones. – One basket, so a main and a side cook one after the other. – At today’s price it is sold by a third-party marketplace seller on Takealot, not by Takealot itself. Check who handles warranty claims. – [Unverified] Dishwasher safety: the listing’s spec table says “Dishwasher Safe: No”, but its description mentions “dishwasher-safe parts”. Check the manual before you put the basket in the dishwasher.
Key specs (per listing): 6.2 L ยท 1,700 W ยท analogue controls ยท up to 200 ยฐC ยท 12 cooking methods listed, including air fry, bake, grill, roast, reheat, defrost and dehydrate ยท removable non-stick basket ยท 24-month warranty.

Better: Philips 3000 Series NA341/00 Digital Window Airfryer (7.2 L)
Best for: families who cook full meals in the air fryer, not just snacks, and want a touchscreen and a window to check on food without opening the basket.
The step up gives you an extra litre of space, a 2,000 W rating, a touchscreen and a viewing window. Philips’ description calls it suitable for “full family meals” and lists “16 ways of cooking”. Today’s price of R2,199 is a large cut from the listed R4,319. Check that the price hasn’t gone back up before you buy.
Pros – 7.2 L basket gives more room for a whole family’s portion in one go. – A cooking window means you open the basket less often. – Touchscreen controls and Philips’ HomeID recipe app, per the listing. – 24-month warranty, per the listing. – Takealot rating 4.9 stars from 78 reviews (a smaller sample than our Good pick).
Cons – More than double the price of the Good pick. – Still one basket, so no cooking two foods at different temperatures. – A 2,000 W rating means a higher maximum draw than the other two picks (see running costs below). – Sold by a third-party marketplace seller on Takealot at the time of checking.
Key specs (per listing): 7.2 L ยท 2,000 W ยท touchscreen ยท cooking window ยท “RapidAir Plus” airflow ยท 24-month warranty. The listing gives no temperature range. [Unverified]

Best: Instant Vortex Plus VersaZone (8.5 L)
Best for: families of four (or more) who want one big drawer some nights and two separate zones on others, for example chicken in one and chips in the other.
The VersaZone is the most flexible of our three. It cooks as one 8.5 L drawer, or you add the divider to get two 4.2 L zones with separate time and temperature settings. Its SyncCook function copies one zone’s settings to the other, and SyncFinish times both zones to finish together. Takealot sells and ships it itself, at R2,999. Loot lists it at R4,499, so on today’s prices Takealot is R1,500 cheaper, even though only the Loot link earns us a commission.
Pros – Switches between one large drawer and two zones, which is useful for different family dinners. – Temperature range of 35โ205 ยฐC, per the listing (the widest stated range of our three). – Instant says the cooking drawer, tray and divider are non-stick and the tray and divider are dishwasher safe. – Takealot rating 4.8 stars from 197 reviews.
Cons – Each zone is only 4.2 L when you use the divider. A fixed dual-basket model with bigger baskets may suit you better if you always cook two things. – 12-month warranty, per the Takealot listing, against 24 months for both Philips picks. – Bulkier than a 6 L model. The listing’s dimensions look wrong (a height of 7.7 cm), so we haven’t quoted them. Measure your counter space.
Key specs (per listing): 8.5 L single drawer or 2 ร 4.2 L zones ยท 1,700 W ยท 35โ205 ยฐC ยท functions: air fry, roast, grill, bake, reheat, dehydrate, SyncCook and SyncFinish ยท 12-month warranty.

- Two fixed baskets on a budget: Kenwood kHealthy Dual Basket Air Fryer with Window HFG95.000BK. It has 2 ร 4.5 L baskets, 2,400 W and a 24-month warranty. It costs R1,499 on Takealot and the same R1,499 on Loot.
How to choose an air fryer for your household
Capacity: match it to how many people you feed
These are our rules of thumb, not a standard. Manufacturers measure capacity differently, so treat the litres as a guide.
| Household | Suggested size | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1โ2 people | 3โ5 L | Enough for two portions without heating a big empty chamber |
| 3โ4 people | 6โ8 L single basket, or about 8โ9 L dual | Chips and a protein for four in one or two rounds |
| 5+ people or entertaining | 9 L+, or a dual-zone or oven-style model | Fewer batches, and room for a whole chicken |
Wattage and what it costs to run
Wattage tells you the maximum power an air fryer can draw, not what it uses all the time. Once the chamber is hot, the element switches on and off. Eskom’s 2026/27 Homepower tariff for direct customers works out to R3.56 per kWh including VAT, combining the energy, ancillary-service and network-demand charges (Eskom Tariffs and Charges Booklet 2026/27). Municipal tariffs differ, so check your own bill.
Worst case, if the element ran flat out for 30 minutes:
| Rated power | Maximum energy in 30 min | Maximum cost at R3.56/kWh |
|---|---|---|
| 1,700 W (Philips NA130, Instant VersaZone) | 0.85 kWh | about R3.02 |
| 2,000 W (Philips NA341) | 1.0 kWh | about R3.56 |
| 2,400 W (Kenwood HFG95) | 1.2 kWh | about R4.27 |
Real costs should be lower, because the element cycles. We haven’t measured these models with a plug-in meter yet. Manufacturers make their own savings claims: Instant says the VersaZone uses “up to 80% less energy” than a traditional electric oven. These are the brands’ claims, not our measurements.
Basket, dual-zone or oven style?
- Single basket (Good and Better picks): the simplest and usually the cheapest. Best if you mostly cook one thing at a time.
- Dual-zone (Best pick, or the Kenwood above): two foods at different settings, finishing together. Check the size of each zone, not just the total.
- Oven style (often 25โ30 L, with racks or a rotisserie): more like a mini oven, with more space for trays and roasts, but bigger and slower to clean. We’ll cover these in a separate guide.
Cleaning
Look for a removable non-stick basket or tray, and check the manual for which parts are dishwasher safe; as our Good pick shows, retailer listings can contradict themselves. Use wooden or silicone utensils on non-stick surfaces, and follow the manufacturer’s advice on paper liners.
FAQ
What size air fryer does a family of four need? We suggest 6โ8 L in a single basket, or about 8โ9 L in total for a dual-zone model. All three of our picks are in that range.
Does an air fryer use a lot of electricity? Its maximum draw is high (1,700โ2,400 W for the models here), but cooking sessions are short. Running flat out for 30 minutes at 1,700 W would cost about R3 at Eskom’s 2026/27 direct rate. Real use is usually less.
Is a dual-zone air fryer worth it? It is if you regularly cook a main and a side at different temperatures. If you mostly cook one big batch, a large single basket gives you more usable space for the money.
Can I run an air fryer on a portable power station during an outage? Only if the power station’s continuous AC output is comfortably above the air fryer’s rated wattage. Even then, runtime is short: EcoFlow’s own comparison page puts a 1,500 W air fryer at about 0.5 hours on the 1,024 Wh Delta 2 (EcoFlow, a US page). See our home power guides before you buy.
Why is the same air fryer cheaper at one retailer? Retailers run different promotions. On 19 October the Instant VersaZone was R2,999 at Takealot and R4,499 at Loot. We show both, and we always point out the cheaper option, even when only one link earns us a commission.
How we choose
These picks are research-based. We have not tested these three air fryers ourselves. We compared specifications from live retailer listings and manufacturer descriptions, checked prices on 19 October 2026, and looked at Takealot customer ratings and review counts as a guide to buyer satisfaction, not as our own verdict. Where a listing contradicts itself or leaves out a spec, we say so. When we test a product hands-on, we’ll say that clearly on this page, along with what we measured. Prices, stock and promotions change often; we re-check them each time we update this guide.
